Microsoft Unveils AI-Powered PCs & New Features

With Microsoft’s Build conference kicking off today we have already seen a flurry of announcement centred on new consumer hardware features. Copilot+ from Microsoft shows their vision for the AI future of local AI driving customer PCs. The AI PC era is only beginning, putting manufacturers under pressure to develop more AI focused hardware. Where NVidia has maintained a steady lead we are now starting to see new hardware from Intel, Qualcomm & Groq that aim to upend that comfortable seat at the top. Intel's Lunar Lake chips for Copilot+ PCs launching in Q3 with Qualcomm and Ampere announcing a partnership to build efficient AI infrastructure.

But Microsoft are not putting all the expectations on hardware manufacturers. They are also announcing a new emulator called “Prism” for older x86 and x64 apps, to better support Arm-based hardware. Also on the ticket are new AI features like Recall & Live Captions, added directly into Windows.

Overall, these announcements show Microsoft leveraging it’s advantage to do what it did with PCs, bring AI directly to the consumer in a way that improves how they work. Seems like a very smart play and we’ll surely learn more over the next two days at Build 2024.

OpenAI's in Trouble Again - Risk Team Disbands Amid Criticisms & Equity Controversy

OpenAI's team dedicated to addressing AI existential risks has disbanded following the resignation of key members, including co-founder Ilya Sutskever. Disagreements over company priorities and resource allocation led to the team's dissolution, with members either resigning or being absorbed into other groups. The former co-leader of the superalignment team criticized OpenAI for neglecting safety culture in favour of focusing on 'shiny products'. This has raised concerns about the company's commitment to crucial research on controlling superintelligent AI models.

And related to key members leaving it has also come to light that exiting employees faced a difficult and questionable decision. OpenAI faced backlash for making exiting employees choose between keeping vested equity and signing an NDA. Sam Altman has apologized, confirming the practice and promising changes to the exit paperwork.

Both these stories come off the back of an otherwise successful launch of GPT-4o and remind us that OpenAI is still a relatively young company. In ways they have been praised as not having the corporate feel of Google & Microsoft but I guess that comes at a price. The question is, with the potential that OpenAI wields, can we afford to go through the growing pains?

Slack's AI Training Data Practices Revealed

Slack has been using user messages and files to train its machine learning models without explicit permission, requiring users to opt out through their organization's admin. The company clarified that customer data is not used for generative AI products but for features like channel recommendations. However, inconsistencies in Slack's privacy policies and opt-out process have raised concerns among users and experts.
