Not All Tokens Are What You Need
This research paper introduces the RHO-1 language model which employs Selective Language Modelling (SLM) to improve efficiency by focusing on "useful" tokens during the training process, unlike traditional methods that train on all tokens.
In mathematical tasks, RHO-1 models outperformed traditional models with a fewer number of training tokens and achieved higher few-shot accuracy in fewer training cycles. The research primarily validates the effectiveness of SLM with mathematical data and within controlled pre-training environments, which may not fully generalize to other data types or real-world scenarios without additional adjustments and evaluations.
Future research could explore the adaptability of SLM across broader types of data and tasks, including non-mathematical contexts, to validate its generalizability.
