Meta Adopts New Deepfake Guidelines: Labels Over Takedowns

Meta has revised its policy on AI-generated and manipulated media, opting for more extensive labelling, including a "Made with AI" badge for deepfakes, rather than outright removal. This change, motivated by feedback from its Oversight Board, aims to enhance transparency and provide context, especially during a crucial election year globally. The strategy involves not removing manipulated content unless it breaches other community standards, moving towards an approach that balances the need for content moderation with freedom of expression concerns. These adjustments respond to legal and regulatory pressures, including the EU's Digital Services Act, and come ahead of significant elections, such as the upcoming US presidential race.

AI and Humanity's Future: Diverse Perspectives

The debate over artificial intelligence's potential to end humanity garners varied opinions among leading AI experts. Yann LeCun, a notable figure in AI at Meta, views the "probability of doom" (p(doom)) as less than 0.01%, a figure more optimistic than the likelihood of an asteroid impact. In stark contrast, Geoff Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, two other pioneering AI researchers, estimate this risk at 10% and 20% respectively within the next two decades. Roman Yampolskiy, a prominent AI safety scientist, holds a grim view, believing AI's threat to humanity is nearly certain at 99.999999%. Elon Musk, in a recent seminar, aligned with Hinton's risk estimate but emphasized the potential benefits of AI, advocating for development with caution. He suggested ensuring AI's honesty could mitigate risks, challenging the more conservative stance of abandoning AI development altogether advocated by Yampolskiy.

YouTube's AI Training Policy Alert to OpenAI

The controversy stems from OpenAI's unclear stance on whether Sora uses data from YouTube. This warning underscores the ongoing debate around AI training practices and content ownership, with OpenAI's competitors, like Google's Gemini model, navigating these waters by adhering strictly to permissions outlined in creators' licensing agreements.
