Hugging Face Platform Security Breach

Researchers from JFrog reported that code uploaded to the AI development platform Hugging Face secretly installed backdoors and malware on user devices. They found around 100 machine learning model submissions with hidden, unwanted actions. Notably, ten of these models were identified as truly malicious, compromising user security when activated. One particular model opened a reverse shell, allowing full remote control over the user's device, a major ethical breach in research standards. The malicious models, including one submitted under the username "baller432," exploited the pickle format's "reduce" method to execute arbitrary code, bypassing Hugging Face's malware detection. Hugging Face has removed the implicated models following the revelation.
